One weekend when we weren’t completely ready to give up summer, we headed to Fjellerup Strand for our last camping trip of the season to enjoy time as a family on one of the best beaches in Denmark! Because we wanted to get the most out of time in the sun and water, we decided to make it a camping weekend, and Fjellerup Strands Camping gave us a relaxing place to call home.

Reception at Fjellerup Strands Camping

As with any camping trip, your first stop is always the reception desk at the campground to check in. When we arrived at Fjellerup Strands Camping, we were given a map of the campground, a paper for ordering fresh, morning bread (if we chose to do so), and a packet of important information about the campground.

Camping in Denmark rules are pretty much the same from place to place, but it is always good to know the opening hours of the campground store, reception and entrance gate. This packet was also helpful in telling us where to find information about activities, laundry, and expectations of camper behavior.

The reception area also had brochures of local attractions and menus for local take-out places. Since we arrived just after suppertime, we made use of the menu of the local pizza place! Yum!

Camping on the Fjellerup Beach (Strand)

By looking at the map of Fjellerup Strand (kort), you can’t always tell how different the spots will be from each other. There are ones that are closer to the beach, which, of course, offer the best views of the coast. However, if shade it what you are looking for, you can also find that at Fjellerup Strands Camping.

Our Spot at Fjellerup Strands Camping

Our spot was located north of the reception building but farther east that the entrance. We were close to the beach but not directly next to it. This meant that we weren’t able to see the shore form our spot, but we were still able to see it when we walked around our spot. This area also had no trees, so we didn’t have anything to block out the sun.

We didn’t mind, since we went on the trip to be out in the warm, summer sun. Fjellerup Strand is always best when the weather is warm, in my opinion. Bring on the sun!

Camping in the Shade

The spots that are located along the reception building or south of it have more trees. You don’t need to fear the sun in these spots, since they offer quite a bit of shade. Perhaps when you book your stay here, you can specify which area you would like to have for your camping spot if having sun or shade is important to you!

Playground at Fjellerup Strands Camping

Camping with kids at Fjellerup Strands Camping is quite enjoyable since they have not one but two great playgrounds!

Larger Playground

The larger of the two playgrounds is located next to the main bathroom/kitchen building at the front of the campground. The large Fjellerup Strands Camping “legeplads” as it is called in Danish has a great climbing ship with slides and rope ladders. I know that if I were a child, that would be my favorite part.

For my boys, they love every opportunity to hop, so they were happy to see the hopping pillow and trampoline! There are also other climbing areas, a teeter totter, and swings. I also appreciate that they have a picnic table in the middle of the playgrounds for parents and grandparents to sit while they watch the children play!

Smaller Playground

On the other side of the toilet building is another smaller playground. This one is smaller because there isn’t as much equipment as the other playground. However, it has a great climbing tower, slides and swings. I can image that it might have been a nice place to “confine” your child as you went to the restroom since it was enclosed with a fence.

It didn’t seem that it was more suited for a certain age of children, though. Children of all ages could have fun on this playground! Both playgrounds have a lot to offer children.

Outdoor Ball Field

If you have soccer (football) players in your house like I do, you will be happy to hear that they have an outdoor soccer field at Fjellerup Strands Camping. This is a big, fenced-in area, near the shaded section of the campground. It is perfect for children who want to burn off some energy without getting their balls in other people’s campsites!

Moon Cars

All around the campground, there are also many moon cars that children can use to help them get around the campground. The paths are covered in small stones, which makes it a great path for moon cars or bicycles, in case you are deciding whether to bring your bicycles along for the trip.

Other Play Areas at Fjellerup Strands Camping

Petanque (Bocce Ball) Field

Often when we go camping, my boys like to take out our petanque or bocce ball set. Luckily for them, Fjellerup Strands Camping has a special spot to play this game. If you don’t have your own set, you can borrow one from the reception. This court is also located next to an outdoor grill with picnic tables, so you can play a game while you wait for your food to cook or after a meal!

Multihal

In the multihal (multi-hall) at Fjellerup Strands Camping, there are many fun things to entertain children. We almost missed out on this part of the campground, since the weather was perfect for being outside. However, when we did take a peek inside, it was hard to get my boys to leave!

Indoor Soccer (Football) Field

The main area inside the hall is the ball court. I say court, since it is inside, but it looks like a walled-in soccer field that you would see in many sports halls throughout Denmark. My boys and husband enjoyed playing soccer (football) here with the balls that were provided.

Video Game Room at Fjellerup Strands Camping

There is also a video game room next to the soccer court. Here, you could find a gaming console attached to a TV with two comfortable, cushion chairs in front of it. They also have a wall of PCs where my kids enjoyed finding their favorite internet games to play.

Indoor Play Area

Another really fun area to mention is the indoor play area. This is one of those climbing towers that is made of soft material to make it comfortable for children to be on their hands and knees at times. This can be a great place to visit with little ones who need an indoor activity out of the sun or rain! It also has a foosball table which is always fun!

On the other hand, the multihall can also be a place for adults too. There is even a nice TV room in the upstairs of this building that is just for adults, so it isn’t only a place for the kids!

Children’s TV Room (TV Opholdsstue), Darts and Table Tennis

If your children need a break from the days out in the sun, they can visit the TV Room at Fjellerup Strands Camping. They also have lots of tables and chairs, so it can seat many people. There are also high chairs in this room for those traveling with babies. During our stay, we noticed that they had an event in the TV Room.

In Denmark, watching Disney cartoons is a routine for children every Friday night. Fjellerup Strands Camping allows families to continue this routine in the TV Room. They also had a film, which they played via a projector on a large screen on the Friday that we were there.

Outside the TV room, you will also find a shelter with picnic tables, a dart board and a table tennis table. You can borrow table tennis equipment from the reception if you don’t have your own! We, on the other hand, never leave home without ours!

Toilet Building and Showers at Fjellerup Strands Camping

Often times, you can tell a lot about a campground by its bathrooms. I was happy to find that the bathrooms at Fjellerup Strands Camping, though a bit retro, were very clean with many toilets, sinks and showers to avoid having to wait for them.

There is one main building at Fjellerup Strands for toilets and showers, which is located close to the reception building. These are separated by men’s and women’s, but each offers many separate toilets, showers, and sinks.

It is also nice to see that some of their sinks were lower to the ground, which is perfect for that little boy or girl who wants to feel more independent when going to the bathroom alone.

Family and Child’s Bathroom

However, for families, it is often easier when you have all of the bathroom essentials in one room. This is why it is nice that there are multiple, family bathrooms at Fjellerup Strands Camping, as well. Here, the parents and children can easily stay together to get their bathroom needs met, which makes it helpful for parents with small children.

Next to the family bathrooms, you will also find a baby/child bathroom. This is perfect for parents with babies, since there is a changing table in there. But I often think back to the days when I had a baby and a toddler. This room has a child-sized toilet, sink and shower, so your little person can be more independent and do it all his or herself.

Second Bathroom/ Showers / Outdoor Kitchen Building

If you are located on the far-eastern side of the campground, you also don’t have far to go to the bathroom or wash dishes. There is another, smaller bathroom and outdoor kitchen in that area, as well. Though it only has a few family shower rooms, the toilets were never fully occupied whenever I went there. I also thought it was nice to be able to wash dishes closer to our camper.

Kitchen Building

Back in the main bathroom building, you will also find the main kitchen. Though only one room, this room was quite large and offered a lot of different sections. The walls on both sides of the kitchen had sinks, while the center had many stove tops. There were also two large refrigerators and an oven in this kitchen, which could be helpful for those camping in tents or those not wanting to cook in your camper.

Many people like us tend to use our own personal grills at our campsites for cooking, but it is always nice to have a clean place to wash dishes and prep meals.

Outdoor Grilling Area

Though for some, you may plan to do all of your cooking at the outdoor grill. Located near many picnic tables, the outdoor grill is a great place for those who are camping in larger groups to have a place to cook a lot of food at one time. You can also use the nearby picnic tables to rest all of your grill gear.

Next to the outdoor grilling area is a shelter with even more picnic tables, a dart board and a ping pong table. If you want to enjoy your meal closer to the grills, this would be a great place to do that!

Laundry Room at Fjellerup Strands Camping

For those wanting to do some washing while at Fjellerup Strands Camping, you are in luck. There is a laundry room at the campground next to the kitchen. You will find three washers and three dryers, and there is also a sink.

Need to do laundry? No Problem!

Just outside the laundry room, you can find a place to get tokens for the machines, and some extra, helpful instructions on proper use of the machines can be found in the information packet when you check in. When traveling with small children, you never know when you might need to wash bedsheets unexpectedly. Having a nice laundry room can make such a difference!

Renting a Cabin at Fjellerup Strands Camping (Hytter)

If you don’t have your own camper or tent, you can rent a cabin or “hytte” at Fjellerup Strands Camping. These are conveniently located next to the playground, making them perfect spots for families with small children. Cabins are small but seem to have just what you need from multiple bunk beds and a loft for sleeping.

There is also a small kitchen with a table and chairs. They don’t have bathrooms, but you are right next to the bathhouse, which is a nice bonus! There is also outdoor seating and drying racks, which are very nice to have during the summer!

Fjellerup Strands Camping Shop (Butik)

If you are need of some snacks, ice cream and a few forgotten items, the Fjellerup Strands Camping store my have just what you need. We took advantage of it for the sweet and salty snacks that we lacked in our camper, especially on Friday, when the boys were expecting their “Friday candy”.

They have coolers with other food and drink items, a section for beach items, and also some unexpected items like fishing supplies!

What to do at or near Fjellerup Strands Camping

1. Relax at the Fjellerup Strand (Beach)

It should go without saying that Fjellerup Strand itself is the main reason why people come to this area. With its shallow waters, this beach is perfect for those with small children. Since the beach stretches for miles, it is also a great place to take a walk with an amazing view.

2. Eat at the Fjellerup Vaffelbageri

A short walk down the beach from Fjellerup Strands Camping is the Fjellerup Vaffelbageri. We went there for lunch and ice cream on one of the days we visited the beach. Since this is a pretty popular spot, be prepared to wait in lines and for your lunch. For us, it was a great experience to have at least once to try their infamous ice cream!

3. Play at Djurs Sommerland

If adventure is what you seek, check out one of Denmark’s best amusement parks: Djurs Sommerland. Though this is a short drive away, it is a fun place to visit if you have a longer stay at Fjellerup Strands Camping. You will find large rollercoasters for the more adventurous people, but they also have some other attractions that are closer to the ground. It is most definitely a great place for the “big kids”.

4. Explore Gammel Estrup Manor Home

For those of you how are interested in checking out a great historical home in Denmark, check out the Gammel Estrup Manor Home. You can read all about what they have to offer HERE!

5. Shop for Fresh Fish at Prebens Fisk

Just a short walk from the campground is Prebens Fisk, a great place to buy fresh fish on your trip to Denmark’s eastern coast. Here, you can buy a meal to enjoy or buy some fish to take back to the campground for supper! Prices are reasonable, and they offer a good selection.

Overall Thoughts of Fjellerup Strands Camping

We really had a great time at Fjellerup Strands Camping. We were quite surprised at how quiet and peaceful the campground was, and we felt very comfortable there! It was a great place to spend relaxing evenings in our home-away-from-homes. The other campers near us were very friendly, and the entire experience was very pleasant.

My boys loved the Multihal! Before we made our way to the beach, they liked that they could relax with a video game or a game of soccer that wasn’t out in the heat.

For me, it was the close proximity to the beach. I loved that we didn’t have far to walk to get to the perfect spot at the water, and we could easily go back to the camper if we needed something like a snack or forgotten sand toys! We all felt that it was nice to have the outdoor shower to get the sand off of us after a day at the beach, as well.

It seemed that we had everything we could possibly need right there at the campground! I would highly recommend it for any family looking for a great place to stay when visiting the wonderful beach in Fjellerup!
