Hjarbæk Fjord Camping in Denmark

Join us as we visit Hjarbæk Fjord Camping in Denmark’s beautiful Limfjord area of Central Denmark.

Just as Denmark was coming out of its time with the corona virus in the beginning of May 2020, we decided that it was time to get back into camping.

We lived in Midtjylland, Denmark and didn’t want to travel too far to find the perfect spot in the quiet of nature to spend a weekend away. My family and I were hoping to camp on the Limfjord, which is an inlet of water from the North Sea. It is actually located on the border between northern and central Denmark.

Why we chose the Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

A “nice campground” or “dejlige campingplads”, as the Danes like to say, would be a place where our boys could spend hours burning off energy on a great playground and where my husband and I could sit and sip on our coffee and tea without interruption.

We also wanted to find one of the most scenic camping sites in central Denmark with beautiful views of the coast. Hjarbæk Fjord Camping seemed to fit all of the criteria for the best camping in Jylland (Jutland) of our newly begun 2020 Danish camping season.

Checking in at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

Arriving to Hjarbæk Fjord Camping was very easy. We followed a main road north of Viborg not too far to where we had to turn off for the campground. We found the spot to park our car/camper to check in, and the owners, Morton and Lone, were in the reception to greet us.

Unexpectedly, they let us go into the campground on foot to see the sites and pick the one that was best for us. I loved this idea! Located directly in front of the playground and situated on a hill, we found a beautiful view of the Limfjord.

The View From our Camper at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

While we set up our tent on the side of our camper, the boys went out to playground to try out all the equipment they had. We couldn’t help but stare out at the beautiful view of the Limfjord that our spot offered. We were so hopeful for all the relaxing we would do that weekend!

Large Playground and Racetrack at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

We loved that we could see the playground from the tent of our camper. Our children could go on any of the different pieces of equipment and still be in our eye’s view. That gave me peace of mind.

The playground was quite amazing, if you asked this mom. For being a smaller-sized campground, it had a huge playground! This was just one of many reasons why Hjarbæk Fjord Camping was a fantastic, kid-friendly campground.

Different Play Areas

The playground offered lots of options for the children. They had two jungle gyms with slides and one also had a playhouse next to it and sand at the bottom for the children to play. They also had swings that were separate from the jungle gyms.

My favorite had to be the ship! I always thought it would be fun to have a ship that you could play on. It was a nice touch to this very large playground.

Our Favorite Playground Areas

My boys had two favorites: one was the large, climbing pyramid, and the other was the racetrack. These were the two areas where they spent the most time playing. I could imagine that the top of the pyramid would offer a nice view of the Limfjord, but the racetrack also allowed them to be creative by moving the tires around to create their own obstacles when racing. They also made lots of new friends on the playground, which is always the best part!

The playground also offered a few areas that were great for the little ones, and we also noticed that the hopping pillow and trampoline were there, but weren’t operational yet. We’d have to remember that for the next time.

Our experiences with camping in Denmark usually have to do with our children playing on the hopping pillow. They just love that thing! In the middle to the picture below, you can also see a round, green cage of sorts. This reminded me of a hamster wheel! The boys loved rolling around in it!

Animal Farm Area at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

One area that was also a big hit with our two boys was the animal farm. Here, children and adults could visit bunnies and goats in the petting area. My youngest son said that he was already good friends with Cupcake and Bob, two of the goats. It was nice to see so many children with the animals.

Outdoor Kitchen and Grill at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

First, we noticed the picnic area and outdoor kitchen and grills since they were just across from the playground. I had never seen so many public grills at a campground, and the fact that there were so many picnic tables next to them gave me the idea that this would be a fantastic place for a party.

Behind the grills was the outdoor kitchen, which had many sinks, stove tops and ovens. I was very surprised to see ovens outside. This was a first for me at a campground. My kids kept telling us that they wanted to bring a frozen pizza to the campground, but we assured them that there was no way to cook it.

We know you will also love this great campground in southern Germany: Strandcamping Waging am See!

I guess we looked pretty dumb when they saw those ovens. Whenever we go back to the Limfjord region, I have a feeling they’ll remind us of the time we lied to them about cooking pizza at a campground. Those boys never forget anything when it comes to their favorite food!

Indoor Kitchen at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

Next to the outdoor kitchen was the main building of the campground. Here, we found the indoor kitchen which was actually smaller than the outdoor kitchen. It had sinks, a table, a few stove tops and an oven.

They also had a stereo inside playing a local radio station. This was really nice. Washing dishes at a campground can be very tedious and boring, so to have some music to listen to was a nice touch that we weren’t expecting.

Toilets and Showers at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

Next to the indoor kitchen was the toilet and shower room, which was filled with many stalls that each had a toilet, sink, mirror and detachable shower head on the wall. This meant that the room was co-ed making it nicer for families to be able to use together if needed.

There was nothing separating the shower from the room except for a curtain. It reminded me of being in a tiny apartment in Copenhagen where everything you would need in a bathroom would be shoved inside a space that was no bigger than a phone booth.

This bathroom, however, was much larger than that at Hjarbaek Fjord Camping, but the fact that there was no separate stall for the shower made it an interesting place.

Everything worked quite normally, though, and I even loved the smell. That isn’t something I would say everyday when talking about a bathroom at a campground, but the smell reminded me of the perfume counter at a high-end department store.

There was also a “baby” stall that had a changing table and mini tub in it, which would be nice for those with little ones.

Game Room at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

Next to the bathrooms, there was a game room. This was a great indoor space with air hockey, Foosball, ping pong, pinball and video games. I could see this as being a great hangout spot for the teenagers that I saw at the campsite or even a great place to go if the weather would turn rainy. I also loved the variety in activities that they had in this room.

Store at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

The bathrooms at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping had an entrance door on the back of the main building and one on the front of the main building, so we decided to walk through to get to the front. This was where they had the store.

Hjarbaek Fjord Camping store, cafe and reception

Our main reason for looking in the store was mostly for checking out the ice cream and candy situation. What else?! They had a good selection of both in the store, and they also had a few food items, toiletry items and other things.

From what I could see, they had what it was you would probably forget to pack or run out of, so that was nice to see popular items in the store. They also had some wines and beers from a couple of local places which we were excited to see.

I love it when campgrounds support local businesses and introduce their guests to items that they may not be able to get in other places. We love trying local foods and drinks.

Café at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

There was a section in the store that was for the café. This was a very sweet little area. I loved how Lone, the owner, added antiques and crafts in the café and throughout the campground to give the space a “hygge” or cozy feeling. It was still too early in the season for the café, so we weren’t able to enjoy a meal there, but we would definitely like to try it another day.

Nisse Hytte (Gnome Homes)

When you walk around this quiet campsite in central Denmark, you have to be on the lookout for “nisse”, which are Denmark’s beloved, magical creatures that tend to live in nature. They are particularly popular around Christmas time in Denmark, but you can also find them at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping.

Biking with kids can be great if you know where to go! Check out this biking post in Austria!

Throughout the campsite, you can find many different “nisse hytte” or nisse cottages that are filled with different displays that will give you something fun to find as a family.

Walking Path and Beach at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

We promised the boys that we would return to the store for an ice cream after our walk, because we wanted them to be motivated and perhaps, a little less whiny when it came to a short walk to the beach area.

Children never cease to surprise me in how pleasant they can be one minute and how cranky they can be the next. It is good to be prepared for both. Our hopes were that they would be a bit more pleasant if they knew ice cream awaited them at the end.

If you walked in the opposite direction from where you came into the campground, you would be on the path that led to the water. As we got closer to the coast, we noticed a red cabin that the owners had mentioned could be rented out. Just a short walk farther was the beach.

It wasn’t what you would think of when you hear the word beach, since this was mostly for accessing the water by kayak or boat. There was a boat near the shore and a few picnic tables. It was a great place to take a break and look at the water. We thought it was a nice, small beach on the Limjford.

The Swimming Pool at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

Not having a huge swimming beach is not a big deal for Hjarbæk Fjord Camping, since they do have a rather nice swimming pool with a slide. This is always a crowd pleaser and much nicer than the cold Danish water, in my opinion.

Of course, it was much too early in the season for the pool to be open during our visit, but it was nice to know that they had one for a future visit.

If you love playgrounds and family fun, you will love the Gustavsvik Campground in Sweden!

There is nothing better than a nice dip in a pool at a campground on a hot summer day!  At the pool area at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping, you will find a larger, deeper pool for swimming and a smaller, more shallow pool for the smaller children.

Soccer Field at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

When we got back from our walk to the coast, the boys were happy to get their ice cream from the store. It was at the time that we left the store that I realized that there was a soccer field just outside of the store at the back of the animal farm area. The soccer field was hidden from the playground with some high bushes.

I also noticed that there was a ball on the field. This was a nice touch. Later on in the day, one of the campers was out there playing a game with his sons and a bunch of other boys from the campground. My boys decided to join the game, while my husband and I relaxed on the nearby hammocks.

Nature Bingo at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

On the second day at the campsite, we decided to check out the Nature Bingo that Lone, the owner, had mentioned to us. It was just after lunch, and the day was very sunny and warm. We were ready to explore.

First, we went to the store and picked up a map and bingo card. The task was to follow the map and go all around in the farmlands surrounding the campground to find posts with different numbers on them. If we had these same numbers on our bingo card, we could cross them out. Our goal was to get one row checked off, which would be a bingo.

The Nature Bingo Path

The path for the nature bingo took us in a forest, in view of the coast and in the farmland. We also reached the highest point in the area and had a fantastic view of the countryside and fjord below. It was a perfect day, and we even got a bingo at the end of the hike!

Scenic Path Back to the Campground

We decided to take a short detour on the way back and found a dog-walking path near a picnic table at the top of the hill we were on. The path led down a steep hill directly to the campground instead of taking us back the way we came. The view was also amazing!

Since we got a bingo, we turned the card into the store and gave them my phone number. She would contact us if we were the big winners of a prize. This had to be determined after all the cards were turned in. The game was on Saturday from 11am to 2pm, which was a good time frame, since it took us a little over an hour to complete the hike.

If you love family hikes, check out this great, natural area in Denmark: Hald Sø and Dollerup Bakker.

We were a bit surprised that as we were getting supper made at our camper later on, someone came to deliver our “prize”, which was a bag of coffee from the store. It was as if they knew it would be a cherished gift…by my husband, at least!

Rent a Cabin on the Limfjord at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

After supper, we decided to take a walk as a family to see the rest of the campground. This is when we thought it would be a good time to check out the other side of the campground. The main road to the campground in which the main building sat divided the campground into two sections.

On our side, we were more on a hill, but the other side wasn’t. Here, we found some really cute cabins that could be rented. All of the cabins came with duvets and pillows and some kitchen items. You would need to bring your own sheets and towels.

(Because this is a sponsored post, we were given access to the cabins to have a look. They are normally locked to guests who haven’t rented them.)

Cabin Style 1

The first cabin we looked at could easily be for 6 people. It was a very cozy setup with the beds, dining and kitchen all being in one room.

Cabin Style 2

This second style of cabin was different from the first. Here you could also sleep 6 people, but there were two rooms and a loft, which added a bit more privacy. There was a table and kitchen in the main section of the cabin and a toilet that was located just outside the main door. I liked this style because it meant that children who went to bed earlier than the others could be in a room with a shut door giving them more peace and quiet.

Cabin Style 3

The third style was perhaps the smallest of them all, and we were surprised to see one of them on our side of the campground. It was a perfect little home for two people with limited needs. There was no kitchen in this cabin, but they did supply you with some essential tools for the kitchen. The view was also quite amazing compared to the others. This would be a perfect spot for a couple’s getaway for a week or weekend!

The Small House

There is also a cabin at the water’s edge that is available for rent at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping. This is equipped with a toilet and bath, which makes it a perfect place if you want to get away from civilization for a while and get closer to nature.

Second Playground and Sandpit at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

On the side of the campground with the cabins, we also found a really cute playground that was more suited for the younger children. They had a couple of different-sized jungle gyms, a teeter totter, swings, slides and a very large sandpit with toys.

I love how sand pits usually come with toys already in them in Denmark. It really helps lighten the packing load when we go camping.

It was also equipped with both an indoor and outdoor kitchen, which allows those camping on this side of the campground to have the same types of amenities. There were even covered picnic tables for families to enjoy a lunch in view of the playground.

Mini Golf at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping

On our last day at the campground, we decided to try out the mini golf course. We love playing mini golf at all of the campgrounds we visit, so we knew that this would need to be something we did before we checked out for the weekend.

The course was mostly metal, but it was one of the better metal courses. It was surrounded by grass and plants and there were fun little decorations on the different holes. I particularly liked the bike that was on one of the holes.

We had a lot of fun playing, and my youngest son even got a hole-in-one!! Courses that aren’t too difficult are our favorite, because having fun and laughing during the game is what is most important. We had lots of laughs on this course.

Other Important Information

There are a few extra things I should mention about Hjarbæk Fjord Camping.

Fire Pit

Like many campsites in Denmark, you are not allowed to have your own fire, but there is a communal fire pit that is large enough for a crowd. You may want to check with Morton and Lone about when the fire is lit and if there are any special days when you could roast something over the fire.

Laundry

There is a laundry facility at the campground in case you are looking to do some laundry while you are there. It costs to use the machines, but if you have any questions on how to operate the machines, you can ask in the store which is also where you can buy laundry soap.

Waste Areas

There are a two different places for garbage and recycling at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping. Near this area, you can also find a place to dump and clean out your chemical toilet.

Rentals

If you are planning on having a special occasion at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping, you can rent out their dining room that has plenty of seating, tables and a bar area. This would be a great spot for a birthday party, anniversary or other special occasion if you live in the area or are traveling with a large group!

Sporting Activities

The campground also offers you many opportunities to get active in nature. You can borrow a canoe, rent a paddleboard, or take your own kayak out on the water. It is also a perfect location for fishing, too! If you prefer the land, there are plenty of trails to try for hiking or biking, and not far from the campground is even a golf course.

Overall Impressions

Overall, we really had a great time at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping! Many times when we go camping, we will use the campground about half the time during a vacation or weekend away, but this was the first time that we decided not to go exploring around the Limfjord region and just enjoy the quiet, family time that we had at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping.

We wanted a relaxing weekend with no stress, and we wanted our boys to get outside and play with other children, since they had been cooped up inside for many weeks due to the corona virus. This campground had a lot to offer and was very clean with friendly staff. It is definitely a place we will return!
